Accelerated Development Plans
The HoA, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed two weeks earlier at the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, marks a significant step forward. PT BIBU Panji Sakti's president director, Erwanto Sad Adiatmoko Hariwibowo, emphasized the urgency of moving the project forward, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive.
Backed by a $3 billion investment, the airport is set for completion by the end of 2027. The development encompasses:
- The airport facility.
- Aerocity development in the surrounding urban area.
- Aerotropolis planning for wider regional infrastructure.
Erwanto assured that the project would respect local communities, pledging not to disturb productive farmland, residential areas, sacred sites, or historical landmarks. Community lands will be leased without altering ownership rights.
Chinese Commitment and Diplomatic Support
Yu Xueze, president director of ChangYe Construction Group, expressed pride in contributing to a project that integrates culture, nature, and human innovation. Indonesian Ambassador to China, Djauhari Oratmangun, described the collaboration as a symbol of Indonesia-China strategic partnerships in development.
Controversy and Political Debate
The idea for the airport, proposed in 2016, has faced political resistance. Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri criticized the project for risking the marginalization of local communities while primarily benefiting tourism investors. In 2022, the project was removed from Indonesia's national strategic project (PSN) list by then-President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo due to insufficient political support.
However, President Prabowo Subianto revived the initiative, stating that the northern Bali airport could position the region as a "new Singapore or new Hong Kong."
Balancing Tourism and Local Interests
The Bali Tourism Office head, Tjok Bagus Pemayun, supported the project, highlighting its potential to decentralize tourism, reducing overcrowding and traffic in southern Bali. He called for further reviews to ensure safety and minimize risks to local culture and heritage, emphasizing the need for advanced technology in the airport’s development.
Conclusion
The northern Bali airport project symbolizes Indonesia's ambition to balance tourism growth with sustainable development and international collaboration. However, the initiative must navigate local concerns and political scrutiny to achieve its vision of transforming Bali into a global aviation and tourism hub.
