Dwiatmika, the General Manager of The Nusa Dua, confirmed that while the area has catered primarily to luxury tourism, surfing activities remain free of any special charges. Visitors currently only pay a nominal fee for parking their cars or motorcycles. “Until now, ITDC hasn’t imposed a special fee for surfing—those participating simply need to report their activities, and visitors pay just for parking,” he explained. He noted that ongoing discussions with local associations aim to further harness the region’s surfing potential.
In addition to developing its surfing appeal, The Nusa Dua is investing in language training for staff at its member properties. With courses now available in English, Chinese, Russian, and Hindi, the initiative underscores a commitment to growing not just the resort itself but also the surrounding community. “We from ITDC are dedicated to ensuring everyone benefits from this growth,” Dwiatmika added.
The vision for Nusa Dua is to transform it into a more multifaceted destination that offers a variety of leisure and recreational activities while upholding the highest standards of safety and comfort. General Manager Made Agus Dwiatmika emphasized that although the Nusa Dua coastline has long been popular among cruise enthusiasts and casual surfers, there is significant untapped potential waiting to be explored. To this end, plans are underway to collaborate with insurance companies to provide comprehensive coverage for all activities at The Nusa Dua, with the goal of launching this system in 2025.
Surfing enthusiasts will find several promising spots in Nusa Dua. Unlike the bustling surf shacks and schools in Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, Nusa Dua offers a more laid-back vibe. Experienced surfers favor Nico Beach, also known as Nikko Break, for its fast and powerful waves. For beginners, Mengiat is recommended as the ideal spot. With both left and right breaks accessible during mid-high tide, Mengiat offers a gentler introduction. However, since many of Nusa Dua’s breaks are situated over coral reefs, first-timers should consider booking a surf instructor or joining seasoned local surfers to safely navigate the conditions.
While Nusa Dua is emerging as a new surfing hotspot, Bali’s world-famous Kuta Beach remains the best place for learning to surf. Along with neighboring Legian and Seminyak, Kuta continues to serve as the training ground for surfers of all abilities—from backpackers and holidaymakers to digital nomads and retirees. Many surf schools along these beaches offer on-the-spot, single-hour lessons, while more dedicated enthusiasts opt for group lessons or even week-long surf camps that bundle training, accommodation, cultural trips, and the chance to forge new friendships.
As Bali continues to evolve its reputation as a dynamic surf destination, Nusa Dua’s new chapter is set to broaden the island’s appeal for adventure seekers and luxury travelers alike. With strategic investments and community-focused initiatives, the transformation of Nusa Dua promises to add even more excitement to Bali’s rich surfing legacy.
