Bali is known worldwide for its beaches, temples, and rich culture, but in the southern region of Bukit Ungasan stands a monument that has quickly become one of the island’s most iconic landmarks: Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK). Rising to an astonishing 121 meters, this massive depiction of the Hindu god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda now holds the distinction of being the tallest Vishnu statue in the world, and even surpasses the Statue of Liberty in height.

The project was first conceived decades ago by renowned Balinese sculptor Nyoman Nuarta, but it faced years of delays due to financial and political hurdles. After years of perseverance, the statue was finally completed, instantly transforming the Bukit Peninsula skyline. Its sheer scale is awe-inspiring: the monument weighs over 3,000 tons and can be seen from kilometers away, welcoming visitors arriving by air into Bali.

But GWK is more than just a feat of engineering. It embodies the cultural and spiritual essence of Bali, where Hinduism plays a central role in daily life. Vishnu, the preserver in Hindu mythology, riding Garuda, symbolizes protection, balance, and devotion. The site surrounding the statue has become a vibrant cultural park, offering visitors far more than just a photo opportunity. Daily performances of Balinese dance, art exhibitions, traditional music, and religious ceremonies are held here, creating a living showcase of the island’s artistic traditions. From the base of the statue, visitors are also treated to panoramic views of Jimbaran Bay, Uluwatu, and the Indian Ocean  making it a destination that combines spirituality, culture, and natural beauty.
