Phased Restoration Process
Restoration work began in 2024 and will continue in phases throughout 2025 and 2026. The first phase, already completed, included repairs to the temple's boundary walls (passenger), open-sided pavilions (payasam), and smaller shrines (sakanem). The second phase, starting in 2025, will involve dismantling and replacing the temple's main shrine, the palinggih, with a meticulously crafted replica created off-site.
Assistant Manager of Tanah Lot, I Putu Toni Wirawan, assured that the existing palinggih will remain in place until the new one is ready to avoid confusing visitors, particularly international tourists.
Preparing for Sacred Ceremonies in 2027
The restoration is timed to coincide with the Pemlaspas Karya Memungkah Ceremony in 2027, a temple consecration event that will sanctify the newly restored Tanah Lot Temple. The Pamlaspas ritual will purify the new palinggih, while the Karya Memungkah will celebrate the completion of the temple's restoration.
Visitor Safety Amid Bad Weather
As restoration continues, tourists may witness ongoing work at the temple in 2025. However, with Bali experiencing severe weather and high waves during the monsoon season, safety measures have been intensified. Tabanan Regent Komang Gede Sanjaya has urged all tourist attraction managers to enforce strict safety protocols. At Tanah Lot, staff, police, and army personnel monitor coastal areas, advising visitors to stay clear of dangerous conditions.
Tourism Milestone
Tanah Lot remains a top tourist attraction, welcoming nearly 1.8 million visitors in 2024 a notable 11% increase from the previous year. Despite ongoing restoration and challenging weather, the temple continues to enchant visitors with its cultural and spiritual significance, reaffirming its place as one of Bali’s most treasured landmarks.
The full restoration of Tanah Lot Temple will not only preserve its legacy but also ensure it remains a symbol of Balinese heritage for generations to come.
